What is Baptism?
Baptism is an act of immersion in water for a believer: a public declaration of the salvation they have received through Jesus. It is an identification with Christ in His death and resurrection represented by our death to our old life of sin and our resurrection into a new life with Jesus. We baptise because it is an act of obedience to Jesus’ command in Matthew 28:19. Jesus Himself was also baptised (Mark 1:9) as an example for us to follow.
At Devonport CofC, while we acknowledge the meaningfulness of infant baptism undertaken by other churches, we practice a policy of only baptising people who are old enough to have made a conscious decision to follow Christ.
